What are head lice?

Head lice are tiny wingless insects that survive on the human head by sucking blood from the scalp. They are hard to detect, varying in size from a pin head to about 3mm long. Head lice are translucent in colour, but after a feed can look quite dark. They have 6 legs that are specially designed to grip human hair.
